Goals of this course:
This course is intended to provide students with fundamental tools that can greatly enhance their ability to defend themselves from an attack. It incorporates both psychological and physical techniques for self-defense. The class is done once a week over a period of weeks. This is intended to allow the student time to practice the techniques. Daily practice will enhance the learning process and allow these techniques to become second nature. That transition from consciously acting to naturally reacting is necessary for practical self-defense.
Psychological readiness is the most important component of self-defense. In this class, we will discuss the psychological methods for recognizing and preventing dangerous situations. This will include discussions of how to read people, how people are reading you, and the three A's of self-defense: 1) Awareness of your surroundings, 2) Assessment of the situation, and 3) Avoidance of danger. This course will also address common attitudes and concerns about self-defense situations and how to respond properly to them.
The bulk of the class time will be spent on basic physical techniques for defense and escape. Time and repetition is required for these techniques to become second-nature. This portion will include techniques for deflecting attacks, effective counterattacking, and defenses from grabs. Depending on the interests of the class, we may also cover responses to weapons, rape situations, and what to do if you fall to the ground during an attack.
General structure of each 2 hour Session:
The first 20 minutes of each class will be spent discussing the psychological aspects of self-defense. This section is meant to be interactive, and topical questions or comments are welcome.
The next 90 minutes will be spent on physical techniques. These techniques will require practice to master. This portion of the class requires people to work with each other and sometime use props, such as punching bags.
The final 10 minutes will be spent reviewing the physical techniques learned in previous sessions.
The student will gain the most from this class by practicing between sessions. Regular practice will help the student become more familiar with the psychological and physical techniques. This familiarity is important if the techniques are to be useful in a real situation. Furthermore, practice outside of class will allow the student to identify areas of weakness. These questions can be addressed during class with guidance from the instructor.
About the Instructor:
Elizabeth has studied martial arts for the last 19 years. Her training has included hard martial arts, such as Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwon Do, Jiu-Jitsu, and Chinese Wushu, as well as the soft meditative/martial arts of Taijiquan and Qigong. All of these martial arts influence her style of self-defense teaching, with the greatest influence coming from Tang Soo Do. Elizabeth spent two years in China as an English teacher, during which time she was able to deepen her martial arts studies and glean some information about Chinese medicine and philosophy. Drawing on this extensive experience, Elizabeth has developed a self-defense course that she has been teaching for the past year.

Energy Blocks in Accupressure and How They Affect Your Yoga Postures
with Laura Wyrick
Saturday March 12 from 11am to 12:30pm
Laura Wyrick has been a practicioner of Chinese medicine for over 10 years with a private practice in North Kansas City. Laura is nationally certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine as a Diplomate in Asian Bodywork and Therapy. She has taught numerous courses pertaining to the ancient healing arts of acupressure, shiatsu massage and other wellness topics.
In this one-day workshop, you will discover how acupressure channels of the body perform a specific role in creating and maintaining our well-being. These 12 channels not only influence areas of your daily life, they also affect certain stretches in our yoga practice. As you explore the 12 channels; you will learn how energy can become blocked and what the significance of these blocks mean to you physically and holistically. As these channels are revealed you will begin to understand why some yoga postures are more challenging to you personally than others and how to work with that knowledge to deepen and improve your practice.
In addition, you will learn how to activate therapeutic pressure points along the acupressure channels with self-massage. You can then apply this information to your own daily life using the handouts to guide you through your own exploration as you reference diagrams and written material covering the physical, emotional and psychological significance of the energy in each of the 12 channels. In addition, you will get handouts covering the location of specific points on the channel for self-massage and the 6 stretch positions for each of the paired channels. For example: there is a shared stretch for the Stomach and Spleen of the Earth element.
Sign-Up Now to deepen your yoga practice and
bring more balance to your physical and mental body.
