November, 2008 Newsletter
It’s a busy time of year with the Holidays coming up fast and the beginning of another new year. I’m really excited about all the happenings here at Yoga Fix. We will be heading into our busiest time of year; so we’ve made a few changes to the schedule to make this a little smoother. 9 am Hot Yoga is back 7 days a week; which means Ashtang is moving to 11 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I am trying very hard to get the schedule to a good place where we can have consistency and a variety of great classes and instructors. I thank everyone for being patient as we have tried out these new classes and new time slots.
The Holidays get a little crazy, so we wanted to give you an early gift to help with the stress. Jill Tupper has generously agreed to conduct a Free Mediation and Kundalini Yoga Workshop. Donations are welcome. This incredible workshop will take place Sunday, December 7th from 6 pm – 8pm. You can get more details in the article below.
I also thought we could use a little more frivolity in our lives – so I am bringing you a Laughter Workshop on Saturday December 13th 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm. This is a fun workshop that any age or physical condition can enjoy! Again, you can see the article below for all the details.
These are both wonderful opportunities to step outside your everyday routines and stress to come have some fun! I encourage you to bring a friend or multiple friends!
I hope all of you feel that this is your studio and that the changes over the last 7 months have been good ones. I appreciate all the feedback from the surveys and am responding to what you have said. I hope you know how much my self and my entire staff enjoy having this great opportunity to practice yoga with all of you. I wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving. I give thanks this year for being able to share this incredible journey with all of you!
Sincerely,
Mary Horvatin

Posture of the Month |
I thought with the Holidays in full swing; a restorative posture would be a good choice. If you’re tired from a hectic day at work or holiday preparations and obligations – take a break with this posture and feel rejuvenated and ready to go again.
Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose
(Viparita Karani)
The pose described here is a passive, supported variation of the Shoulderstand-like Viparita Karani. For your support you'll need one or two thickly folded blankets or a firm round bolster. You'll also need to rest your legs vertically (or nearly so) on a wall or other upright support.
Step by Step Instructions:
- Before performing the pose, determine two things about your support: its height and its distance from the wall. If you're stiffer, the support should be lower and placed farther from the wall; if you're more flexible, use a higher support that is closer to the wall. Your distance from the wall also depends on your height: if you're shorter move closer to the wall, if taller move farther from the wall. Experiment with the position of your support until you find the placement that works for you. (Not recommended for those with high blood pressure).

Laughter Yoga Workshop - Saturday, December 13 |
Saturday, December 14th
4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Get in touch with your inner child while doing something healthy!
It has been said that children laugh between 300 to 400 times per day. In contrast, adults only laugh between 15 to 20 times per day. So, get your “laugh on” with Laughter Yoga, a fun new exercise system that combines simple, playful movements with laughter and deep yoga breathing to increase feelings of joy and well being. This growing new trend is all over the news:
Laughter Yoga was developed by an Indian physician Madan Kataria in 1995, and has become a grass-roots social movement. The first Laughter Yoga Club started with just 5 people and has spread to more than 5,000 laughter yoga clubs in more than 55 countries.
By laughing, we initiate powerful changes in the body and mind. In a laughter yoga session, we laugh as an exercise, but real laughter quickly develops. Laughter Yoga is based on the scientific concept that shows it does not matter if laughter is spontaneous or induced because the body does not know the difference between the two and therefore; we produces the same chemistry. Laughter creates a "feel good" chemistry that acts as a natural painkiller, and it rejuvenates and accelerates healing processes in the body. Research also shows laughter improves oxygenation, produces endorphins, releases neurotransmitters which create new pathways in the brain, and balances the hormonal system, boosts the immune system and creates positive emotions or feeling of joy.
Please Pre-Register for this class: $10 in Advance – $12 at the Door.

Staff Book Pick of the Month |
Kat’s pick is Bikram’s Beginning Yoga Class by Bikram Choudhury
Kat says this book is easy to read. It has real-life situations, not to mention some of the photos and comments are hilarious. The explanations are clear and “it’s by Bikram himself; a book doesn’t get much better!”
This is a great reference book. The instructions are clear, the photos show the postures and it’s a quick read. This is an ideal book for any student doing a regular practice of Hot Yoga. You can find this book at White Light Books.
