Feature Product
Skidless towel by Yogitoes
Price: $60.00

Tired of slipping during yoga?  Now’s the time to invest in the Skidless towel by Yogitoes.  This rubber-nubbed towel is not only your best defense against slipping; its super absorbent quality puts a hygienic layer between you and your mat.

On a personal note: I started using my Skidless towel 6 months ago and wouldn’t practice yoga without it now.  I never worry about slipping no matter how far apart I’m stepping in my postures or sweaty I get.  It has also saved wear and tear on my yoga mat – my mat still looks and smells like brand new.  The Skidless towel soaks up most of my sweat allowing me to throw my towel in the wash instead of my mat.  And the Skidless towel is so durable it has withstood frequent washings without losing its integrity.  Love my Skidless towel – worth every penny!

Letter from the Editor

What lovely days we have been having this past month.  A perfect time to get in those last outdoor activities before the weather sends us back inside to hibernate for yet another winter season.  This is that time of year that a million other things seem to creep in front of our yoga practice – walks outside, grilling, sitting on the patio with a glass of wine and good friends – and suddenly we haven’t seen the inside of the studio in days, if not weeks.  The next thing we know we have begun to feel sluggish, perhaps put on a few pounds, the old aches are back and we are getting stiff in the mornings.  To this I say, remember life is about balance.  While I applaud the communing with nature and friends; I emphasize the need to keep the body, mind and spirit healthy.  We only get one vessel to carry us through this life.  Let’s not take a leaky, cracked vessel on the journey.  While most of our daily activities add a certain amount of stress and strain on the body physically and mentally; yoga is a gift – a rejuvenator to the mind, body and spirit.  Yoga can only heal us if we are actually doing it!  So find that balance – bring your friends to yoga with you; meet them before or after yoga; walk to yoga; bike to yoga – are you beginning to see the pattern – come to yoga.  I say this with love – because I firmly believe that we create more energy, are happier and experience greater health when we are getting our yoga at least 2 – 3 times a week.  Customers constantly ask me how often they should be doing yoga – the simple answer is everyday.  Yoga is like anything else we do in life – the more effort you put in the more you receive back.  Give yourself a 30-day true commitment to yoga; 3 or more times a week and see your spirits lift, a bounce in your steps, and a smile on your face.  Consider this a loving wake-up call to action.  Don’t wait for the weather to turn cold (along with your joints) – recommit to yourself now.  You are the biggest investor in yourself and you have the most to gain.  Can’t change the mood of the world around you – actually you can – begin with yourself and see how the law of attraction rewards you tenfold.  See you soon!

Sincerely,
Mary Horvatin

P.S.:  Thanks to all of you who have filled out surveys and shared your opinions with me. Your feedback helps the studio grow.  In fact, because of feedback on the survey, we will be starting a Monthly Auto-Pay Program November 1st.  As I see other opportunities to improve the studio; I will respond accordingly.  I hope you all know and feel that this is your studio.

Posture of the Month

This month I have picked 2 postures that can help alleviate insomnia.  Since this seems to be a growing problem amongst adults in America – a growing lack of sleep.

Extended Puppy Pose
(Uttana Shishosana)

This pose stretches the spine and shoulders. A cross between Child’s Pose and Downward Facing Dog, this posture is a great stress releaser helping to calm the mind.

Step by Step Instructions:

  1. Come onto all fours. See that your shoulders are above your wrists and your hips are above your knees. Walk your hands forward a few inches and curl your toes under.

For Complete Instructions click here

Plow Pose
(Halasana)

This pose helps reduce backache and can help you get to sleep.

Step by Step Instructions:

  1. From Salamba Sarvangasana, exhale and bend from the hip joints to slowly lower your toes to the floor above and beyond your head. As much as possible, keep your torso perpendicular to the floor and your legs fully extended.

Posture Tip of the Month

A few words about final spinal.  This seated spinal twist is a power posture that works the entire spine by increasing spinal rotation, boosting blood flow to the disks, and building strength and flexibility in the tiny muscles that support the spine. It is also believed the internal organs are benefited with this deep spinal twist as the stomach, intestines, and kidneys get a big internal squeeze, to help stimulate digestion and elimination.

This pose comes at the end or is the “final” posture because we are wringing out the entire spine and need to be nice and fluid.  As with any of our postures, to avoid injury it is important that we set this posture up properly, taking the time to create length in the spine before and during the twist.  To begin, once you have bent your left or right knee 90 degrees facing the mirror and then brought the right or left foot around to anchor the knee, you really want to take the time to get the tailbone even on the floor and then lengthen the spine by reaching up through the crown of the head and rooting down into the floor through the tailbone; really opening up the spine in both directions.  So really creating space between each vertebrae by inhaling and lifting up nice and tall; exhaling and grounding down through the tailbone, working with the play of opposites to lengthen the entire spine.

Once you have opened up the entire spine you can begin the spinal twist.  Inhaling stretching up tall; exhaling drawing your navel toward your spine as you begin to twist to the right or left reaching your left or right arm up and around grabbing onto the left or right knee, try not to use the motion of the arm to initiate the spinal twist; instead move from your core staying grounded through your tailbone; keeping the chin level, the head level and letting the twist start at your core and move up your spine gradually.  Finally moving your eyes to the right or left side of the room; giving your eye muscles a nice workout as well.

And then as you hold the posture let each inhale lengthen your spine reaching up tall through the top of the head and each exhale help you twist a little deeper moving from the inner core up along the entire spine; keeping the shoulders relaxed, tailbone grounded, chin forward and neck straight. And then just allow yourself to feel the posture. You will probably notice a difference between the two sides as one side of the body tends to be tighter than the other as with many of our postures.  Finally as we unwind turning all the way around for Savasana we will leave the body in perfect balance ready for our final Savasana.

New Class: Yoga Flow on Thursdays 5pm - 6pm

If you read Drew’s Bio above then you perhaps are beginning to have a feel for this class.  Yoga Flow draws on postures from the Ashtanga and Vinyassa series as well as other disciplines.  While Drew brings a beautiful calm and peace to the room as you do your yoga practice; this flowing style class will challenge you.  This is a great workout where postures are linked together in a continuous and challenging flow. This class will leave you feeling energized, centered and more connected!

While Hot Yoga is a wonderful foundation for your practice; I strongly encourage each of you to step out of your comfort zone and try some of these other equally challenging and beneficial new classes.  With the addition of Drew Corrigan and Mandy Ratliff we have added some exceptional talent to our already fine staff of teachers.  If you have been meaning to but just haven’t gotten around to trying Yoga Flow, Ashtanga or Vinyassa yet: I can not stress enough what a great addition this is to creating a balanced yoga practice.  As I have tried each of these new classes; learning new postures, the knowledge of my own body has grown and I have been able to carry back these new approaches and ways of seeing the postures to deepen my Hot Yoga practice.  If you have friends who are heat adverse, these are challenging workouts that you can recommend to your friends.

Feature Teacher of the Month

Drew Corrigan

Drew began studying yoga in May 2004 and it quickly became one of his passions.  He says he enjoys working with beginners to intermediate students; teaching a “style” of yoga that he describes as a blend of the flowing Vinyasa style originally derived from Ashtanga Yoga, and the alignment-based approach of classical, or Iynegar Yoga. He likes to explore poses, explore the alignment and flows of energy in a pose, and integrate what is learned into the “dancing”, “flowing” form of Vinyasa Yoga.

When you take a class from Drew you can feel his compassion as a healer, his inner peace, serenity, and balance. Drew combines his background in anatomy and physiology as a bodyworker, with his many insights and spiritual wisdom from his many years of study.  Drew is a quiet, peaceful soul with a strong desire to continually learn and grow.  When you take his class these are the qualities that come shining through.

Drew not only teaches and practices yoga and bodywork, but has passionate interest in energy healing and teaching massage.  I encourage you to meet Drew in one of our Yoga Flow classes on Thursdays 5 pm – 6pm.

Staff Book Pick of the Month

Lauren’s pick is Dance Kinesiology by Sally Sevey Fitt

Lauren says this book is admittedly a bit of read and is obviously geared for dancers; but it is a wonderful book about all aspects of movement.  The author discusses in detail the function of the skeletal and muscular system, how to avoid injury and how to work with injury.  “If you are really interested in the little details of movement, this is a great book for you.”

2 more books Lauren recommends are Taking Rout to Fly by Irene Dowd and The Architecture & Design of Man and Woman by Alexander Tsiarus.  Taking Route to Fly focuses more on the energy of movement and is not as scientific as some books on movement.  The author also covers how to use breath with movement.

Architecture & Design of Man and Woman is a close up look at the different systems of the body; helping the reader to gain a basic understanding of the different systems.  This is sort of a “bodies revealed” type book known for its advanced imaging of the body.
